About the Dermatology Clinic of Idaho in Boise, ID

Boise Location Office Front ViewThe Dermatology Clinic of Idaho was started in November, 1978 by Dr. Gerald Overly.

In 1996 Dr. Stewart moved to Boise from California and joined the practice. He became a partner of the Dermatology Clinic in 1998. In April, 2004 Dr. Stewart became the sole owner of the clinic.

In May 2004 the Dermatology Clinic of Idaho opened an office in Eagle, Idaho. That office closed on May 2, 2014. In June of 2005 the Boise location had moved from it’s Curtis Street Location to it’s present location at 7733 W. Emerald Street in Boise. All providers and patients are now seen at the Emerald Street office.

In November 2007, Dr. Stewart opened the newest satellite office in Cascade, Idaho. Mariya Ostermiller, our Physician Assistant, joined in 2006 and started accepting patients in 2007. Physician Assistant Tyler McKinnon and Michael Housley both joined the practice in 2016. In the summer of 2017 both Dr Portela and Physician Assistant Chelsea Wood joined the medical staff.

The Boise location for the Dermatology Clinic of Idaho has office hours Monday-Thursday 8-5 and Friday 8-4:30.

The Cascade office has Saturday hours from 9 am – 12 pm every other weekend.

The clinic employs 25 employees including the staff and providers.

Dr. James H. Stewart is a board-certified dermatologist with over 23 years of experience. He joined the Dermatology Clinic of Idaho in 1996. Dr. Stewart graduated with a medical degree from Medical College of Virginia and served his residency at the University of California, Irvine. He received a PhD in nutrition from the University of California, Berkeley.

In addition to his board certification, Stewart is a fellow member of American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Idaho Dermatology Association, Idaho Medical Association, Boise Valley Dermatology, and Ada County Medical Society. He currently is affiliated with Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center and St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center with emeritus status.

Dr. Stewart has practiced dermatology for the Permanente Medical Group, March AFB and was an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California Irvine before moving to practice with the Dermatology Clinic of Idaho in Boise, ID.

Dustin Portela, D.O., is a Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon. Dr. Portela is an Idaho native having grown up in Southeast Idaho.

 

His professional interests include skin cancer surgery and facial reconstruction, skin cancer prevention, complex medical dermatology and wound healing. Dr. Portela has lectured at national dermatology meetings and has published articles in several medical journals.

Dr. Portela graduated with an Honors-Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Idaho State University. He received his medical degree at Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA graduating among the top of his class and being recognized with the Award for Excellence in Physiology. Following medical school Dr. Portela completed his internship through Michigan State University at the Oakwood Southshore Hospital.

His residency training in Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery was completed at Michigan State University through the Beaumont Trenton Hospital in Trenton, Michigan, where he also received his training in Mohs micrographic surgery and where he was recognized with the Excellence in Dermatologic Surgery Award.

Dr. Portela’s professional memberships include the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Society for Mohs Surgery, and the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology.

Dr. Portela enjoys all aspects of dermatology, from skin cancer treatment and post-surgical reconstruction to cosmetic enhancement, as well as the care of both adult and pediatric patients. His goal is to provide the highest quality, patient-centered care available.

Mariya R Ostermiller, MPAS, PA-CMariya ostermiller

Physician’s Assistant

Mariya obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree at Carroll College in Helena, MT. She worked in the surgery, neutropenic, isolation, and inpatient medical units at Deaconess Billings Clinic, and as an EMT before entering into the Physician Assistant Program.

Mariya attained her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies in 2006 at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, MT. Her internship was served in Montana and Wyoming from 2005 to 2006 with the Rocky Mountain College PA Program. She worked as a PA for a dermatology clinic in Billings before moving to Boise to work with Dr. Stewart at the Dermatology Clinic of Idaho in Boise, ID.

Mike Housley earned his Bachelors of Science degree in 2008 from the College of Health Science at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He then worked as an EMT before attending his Physician Assistant Program.

Mike obtained a Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies in 2013 from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. During his clinical work at MWU, Mike received additional training in dermatology. He worked as a Dermatology PA in Victoria, TX for three years before joining Dr. Stewart at the Dermatology Clinic of Idaho in Boise, ID. As part of his ongoing training, Mike has obtained Diplomate Status from the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants through their Distance Learning Initiative.

Tyler McKinnon is a Physician Assistant who started working with The Dermatology Clinic of Idaho in September 2016.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry Cum Laude from Utah State University in 2014, Tyler attended Pacific University in Hillsboro, Oregon where he completed his training as a PA. Although he is a relatively recent PA graduate, years of previous experience as a medical assistant in dermatology has prepared him well to serve you at our clinic.

Tyler is fluent in Spanish, after having lived in Argentina for two years and having completed a minor degree in the Spanish language. He very much enjoys seeing patients who may prefer to communicate in Spanish.

Physician Assistant

Chelsea Wood is a Physician Assistant who received her Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Salus University and her B.S. in Exercise Science at Brigham Young University-Idaho.

After receiving her PA degree with high honors, Chelsea began working as a dermatology PA in St George, Utah. Chelsea comes to us from Northern California where she has been practicing in a family practice setting with an emphasis on dermatology.

In her spare time Chelsea enjoys rock climbing, snowboarding, cycling, and hiking.
